Fifth Element
Lethal Weapon IV (Onkel Benny)
--------------------------------------------------
I do not know much about Kim Chan. Supposedly, he was born 1917 in China, But the real fans of the Ancient don't believe that. In 1928 he moved from China to New York.

He made numerous movies, among other things:
Fifth Element
Lethal Weapon IV (Uncle Benny)

Kim Chan

Quote:
Kim Chan

Born in Toishan Province/China
Birthdate Unknown

Lo Si/The Ancient

Biography
Probably best recognized from his role as “Lo Si/The Ancient” on TV’s Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Kim Chan’s natural charisma raised him from bit parts to a featured player. As a teenager in 1928, Chan came with his older sister to New York from China's Toishan province. He began his performing career in the 1940s, as an extra playing Japanese soldiers, all the while working in his family’s well known New York restaurant, House of Chan. When he discovered that the $125 he got for being an extra beat the $50 a week he got at the restaurant, he knew he’d found his calling. Chan never took any formal acting lessons, but that didn’t stop him from earning featured roles in films such as The King of Comedy and Kundun. His most recent acting job was as the reoccurring character “Eggman” on TV action series Now and Again.

Young at Heart and Just About to Start

Bloody Marvelous: Cast and crew were in stitches working with young-at-heart actor (but don’t call him an “actor” because he’s never taken acting lessons and he honed his craft by studying terrible actors and learning what not to do) Kim Chan (Lethal Weapon 4, Fifth Element) in Zen Noir, the first independent feature film by award-winning, theater director Marc Rosenbush. Rosenbush has been working on the Buddhist murder mystery over the past nine years and wrote the lead part with Chan in mind. “We’re lucky to get [Chan] and feel that this is the best role he’s ever played,” remarks Rosenbush. During the filming, Chan kept looking for a place to slip in his “bloody marvelous” signature statement — which he happily reports he succeeded in doing near the end of filming. Chan was also successful in recruiting his good friend, Bay Area native actor Howard Fong (The Joy Luck Club), as the lead monk. This fall, Chan will be appearing in an episode of Law and Order where he lectures on Chinese calligraphy. Chan, known to correct scriptwriters on incorrect lines, was given the following line: “Calligraphy is the greatest achievement of the Chinese people.” Chan interjects: “Now we all know that’s not true. ... the Great Wall, gunpowder, the compass … now those are some of the greatest achievements.” Next up for Chan is the NYC stage, starring as the “Crimeboss” in the current running Spanish Mob, a comedy/musical about five Italian mobsters. Doesn’t an Italian Crimeboss have to speak Italian? “I do. I speak Street Italian,” boasts Chan, which he learned as a boy while hanging out at his sister’s laundry in Little Italy.

<Interestling enough, Kim Chan, who plays the Ancient in the new series, is , in fact, a Shaolin master. He was, Carradine says, " hired because he gave a good reading...and it was only after we were on the set that we found he was the real thing...which we had never had before".

Was sagt euch dieser Satz?

Linda, this is a question you may help us with an anwer.

funny bought the "Kung Fu Book of Caine" and she found this:

Quote:
<Interestling enough, Kim Chan, who plays the Ancient in the new series, is , in fact, a Shaolin master. He was, Carradine says, " hired because he gave a good reading...and it was only after we were on the set that we found he was the real thing...which we had never had before".

Now we are all trying to find out, if understood this right. Is Kim Chan really a Shaolin? or what does this mean?

I have read this quote too, somewhere else (maybe in Endless Highway?, I am not sure) and what is left from it in my memory tells me that he spoke about Kim Chan as Kung Fu-Master? But I am not sure also...

Lachen

Im 3. Teil vom "Making of KF:TLC" sagt Chris übrigens daselbe über Kim Chan (Szene bei 1:38 ):

In "Making of KF:TLC" there is Chris telling exactly this about Kim Chan:

Quote:
CP: "There is something about Kim Chan that's ...eh... is a mystical in itself. He is a master of Kung Fu and he ... he brings all that to the role."
