Was being a pop star what you dreamt of—so far?
Tony : I think it was later on in my teens when I decided I wanted to do this for a living, I wanted to write songs in my teens but I didn’t really think I had any chance until I was about 17. I started developing a bit of confidence in myself and my abilities; so before then I never dreamt it, I thought I will be studying law instead.
Kevin: When I was younger I just wanted to be a footballer, I didn’t really know I wanted to be sort of singer but when I got to the age of 16 is when I decided it, started singing and really liked it and that’s when I stated to want to become a pop star.
Now that you are one, what do you think about it?
Tony: I thought I would be a millionaire by now that’s the one I honestly believed to be, after having a number one single, so that part is a little disappointing but at the same time I am not complaining as we are doing well, everything else is pretty much what I expected to be which is good.
Have you been rewarded with a big cheque yet for your work?
Kevin: I think in the music business you are always working for a pay cheque you may get a year later, because of royalties, when you sell albums this year then in the next year that money will get to you, after taking off all the money from recording the album, the videos and traveling that comes out as part of the artist shares.
Looking back at the end of Hearsay, do you ever think, Thanks God we didn’t make it to that band?
Kevin: Few times yeah, I think everyday we get up and we sort of thank God and feel lucky stars but of course at the time we did want to be in the band, you cannot change that; I think if we knew while auditioning that the band was going to be as it was, then you wouldn’t want to be in there really; Who knows, maybe if someone else have gone in the band, things may have been different but definitely it all worked out better for us now.
Have you ever been friends with any member of Hearsay?
Tony: We spent a week with them in the finals and that was the only time longer than two minutes we been speaking to them, we kind of got to know them fairly well, they are all nice people, we all got on well but as soon they were chosen for the band they had to cut up contact with anyone that wasn’t probably they immediate family because of the TV show;
Also for a long time after we saw them at the Pepsi Chart and Top of The Pop performing their number one and at times we were at the opposite way of the scale, trying to work our way up and once or twice we felt that we weren’t exactly talked about respectfully; we kind of kept our distance but now is all water under the bridge, if we saw them I am sure we will be able to have a good laugh about what happened…
Surely you will now have a laugh about it all..
I have the feeling that the girls in Liberty X are much more exposed than you guys, what do you think about that?
Kevin: I don’t think anyone really decides who gets more exposed, when it comes to newspapers is obviously going to be the girls as tabloids aren’t really interested in boys, unless we are going out and shag every girl in sight... We are both in happy relationships and is not what we really like doing, being pictured and being a celebrity for nothing doesn’t interest us.
Tony: We thought in going out and get pissed but the thought of being in the papers the next day because of it makes me feel a bit ill; We don’t feel comfortable with being pictured doing the party circuiting, is kind of handy that the girls get all the media attention, the tabloids follow them quite a bit and they been good supporters of Liberty X which is great as we don’t have to be involved in all that.
My passion in the band is writing songs so I like to be in the studio, Kevin writes and performs quite a lot and during the tour out of the reviews he was always mentioned and singled out most of the time because his role became more as the tour went on; when it comes to interviews sometimes one of the girls is really good and takes control, being funny and handle it very well, while others may be tired like me the other day at MTV I absolutely shit myself because I haven’t been on TV for three months, I couldn’t even speak because I was so nervous.
So who is the Leader in the band or who has a stronger character?
Kevin: I think people are stronger in different fields, like someone may be really good doing the press or someone else is good at dance rehearsals, there is not a natural leader but everyone sort of knows when something needs to get done and if one of us is pissing about, then someone within the band will naturally say, we have to get our act together and we will all listen to that.
Tony: It depends on what you feel passionate about, when it comes to the performance many times Kevin would say his views that’s when a lot of times we sit back and listen, when it comes to dancing, Kelly says you are doing that move wrong and I know she is right because she is such a brilliant dancer.
Is Kelly the lead vocalist and the sound of Liberty X?
Kevin: No, I think is because Kelly has such a great voice that’s why she is on each track but is not the sound of Liberty X, any person in the band forms that sound.
Tony: We kind of over rule that whoever sings the solo best, gets to sing it, everyone has a go but in reality the producers decide in their own head they want this person to sing this song as they think it will make a good single but when it comes to us as a band when we get into the studio we always say we would like to give the lead vocalist a go and the producer gets to choose who they want to put on it based on how good they sound; and in lots of times the songs suit Kelly is voice so she ended up singing them. In the albums there is specific style of songs that would suit Jessica voice per example and Kelly wouldn’t be featured, also is the same for Kevin and the rest of us.
As a band we are all happy that when someone sings it better we sit down and say well done, go for it, you take the lead…
Any plans to make a Liberty X movie?
Kevin: Definitely not, no plans so far, I mean, we done a lot of little things for the DVD but certainly not a movie, a documentary would be cool but never a tacky movie like SpiceWorld.
Tony: A fly on the wall documentary would be hilarious, because is a really funny job to have, as there is so many things that go wrong, same as any other job, but when they go wrong with Liberty X they go disastrously wrong and is absolutely hilarious to watch it sometimes; it is amazing we got this far with the amount of things that gone wrong.
Have you got any gay friends?
Tony: Quite a few actually, mainly boys, I used to dance in Lord of The Dance, the Irish dance show and at the time we were all about seventeen and a lot of people hadn’t figured out their sexual orientation, we all used to go out partying every night for three years and by the end of that, people started figuring out what they were. I went to see my friends last month in Bournemouth and about five or 6 of the guys came out which I think is good they did.
Kevin: Yeah, I got quite a few gay friends, a lesbian couple which are really nice
Gaston: Have any one tried to come on to you or molested you at Mardi Grass or in a gay club?
Kevin: Yes, when we did G-A-Y actually, obviously when you go at the front of the stage performing you get grabbed and got my bum pinched, is going to happen, whether they are gay, straight or Martian; that same night I was going out of the club to jump on the car and someone grabbed my ass again, a couple of days later we were doing a signing and this guy came over and said to me, I am sorry for pinching your bum the other day. I said is ok, don’t worry, what can you do? Is not the end of the world, is it? You can’t get upset for something little that, at the end of the day… I quite liked it! Laughs
Tony: Is really disturbing when a fourteen year old girl grabs you by the balls, that’s something kind of sick because I got a sister of the same age you know…
I think you two have quite a big gay following; will we get to see more of you and not so much of the girls on future videos?
Kevin: Is nice to know that somebody wants us..!
You have no idea…!
I was talking to Brian Dowling once and he said that Tony is the best looking pop star around…
Tony: Brian is too nice with us, when we started he was very supportive from day one, I think he even has a liberty X disc hanging in his toilet, that was a little thank you present from us
Do you see yourself as sex symbols?
Kevin: I think we are here to make music and is nice to see a poster of yourself in Smash Hits but is too much effort in trying to be a super star geezer, what is the point in doing that, you have to go out every night, get in the press, go to the gym to get a six pack…
Tony: If you get caught up in that side of things where you believe you are something special, more than any other person working from 9 to 5, then when you go back to your normal life and someone else is getting the attention you have become a prick and you cant change it, you will be a dickhead for the rest of your life; we all worry about the way we look but if you think too much about that because you are on TV then that side of things can really alter your personality and get to your head.
If you were gay, would you come up openly?
Tony: I would definitely, I don’t thing anyone should have to hide anything about them selves, I don’t see the point in doing that; your sexuality is extremely important to you and your well being in your life; but then again for some people is harder than others and may need time to come out because of their families; Kevin and I are both very lucky on that sense as if we were gay I am sure our families wouldn’t have problems with it.
How did you meet your girlfriends?
Kevin: I met my girlfriend about 3 years ago when I was in Blackpool, I was actually in a gay club called Flamingo, we had the first snog in there, can you believe that!
Tony: I met her at an Irish dancing competition when I was eleven and we started going out when I was 17, we been together for over 7 years
Being surrounded by so many good looking people in the business, do you think sometimes you are missing out on fun or feel tempted?
Tony: There is a lot in your face as you said, at parties there is free alcohol and all these actresses and nice people, sometimes you get a little affected by it but it never crosses over to become reality, is never a serious thing I kind of consider, usually is a lot of bullshit the way you meet them and how…
Kevin: All the clubbing and going out thing in a way is a bit crap, I wont go out to these places very much unless I go out with Tony or my brother for a laugh, because you see all these good looking girls hanging around in the VIP area trying to pull someone from a boy band, so there’s no temptation to go with a cheap slag..
Tony: But then if we were single things would have been different, like other lads from other bands that are enjoying all that, they are in a position to go for it but I feel I am lucky to be able to avoid that lifestyle as it could mess with my head a little bit.
What was the best moment or experience since you joined the band?
Kevin: Traveling is wicked and the Brit Award, I cannot remember when it happened until I watched it on the DVD then I realized how big it was.
Tony: Mine was Top Of The Pops when we got a number one, until that moment we were the runners up, rejects of Popstars and as soon as that moment hit, it didn’t matter where did we came from, for one week we were the number one band in England, my family was there right at the front of us, we got presented with our discs from our album by Richard Branson on the stage, it was one of those moments that no matter how you got it, you were just fucking lucky to have it and being Irish get absolutely pissed…
